Writing a Recount

Diary Writing Inspired by Julia Donaldson’s A Squash and a Squeeze
This half term, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed exploring extended writing through the lens of Julia Donaldson’s much-loved story A Squash and a Squeeze. After delving into the characters and storyline, we decided to practise diary writing from the perspective of the little old lady.
We began by exploring the key features of diary writing, which helped pupils understand how to express thoughts and emotions effectively. With their plans in place, we supported their progress through teacher modelling, success criteria toolkits, and assessment for learning opportunities.
To ensure all learners felt confident, we used a gradual step-down of scaffolding support. This began with group work to develop the diary openings, followed by paired writing for the middle sections.
Here’s a look at how things are going so far:

Now, pupils are ready to complete their diary endings independently—and we’re proud of the progress they’ve made!
