Year 8 (Class 3) Science Experiment

Learning Intention: To carry out a waterproof material investigation.
This week in science, Class 3 carried out an exciting experiment to investigate waterproof materials! The learning intention for the lesson was clear: “We can find out which material is best for an umbrella.”
To explore this, pupils had the chance to use important scientific skills. They made predictions about which materials would keep water out, estimated how much water each material could handle, and gave reasoning to explain their choices. This helped everyone think like a real scientist, asking questions and testing ideas.
The experiment was hands-on and full of fun! Pupils got to test a variety of materials to see which were waterproof and which were not. They loved feeling the different textures, pouring water, and observing the results. After testing, everyone recorded their findings carefully, making sure they could compare results and draw conclusions.
It was wonderful to see pupils so engaged and curious, using observation, reasoning, and recording to explore the science of materials. By the end of the lesson, they had a better understanding of how to choose the best material for an umbrella—and had a lot of fun in the process!
