Woodland Trust - Silver Award

Ysgol Hendrefelin have achieved Silver Award for the Woodland Trust's Green Tree Schools Award
We are delighted to announce that our school has earned the Silver Award from the Woodland Trust’s Green Tree Schools Award. This is a fantastic achievement that celebrates our commitment to caring for the environment, learning outdoors, and helping our pupils build a deeper connection with nature.
What the Silver Award Involves
To reach Silver level, our pupils took part in a series of woodland and nature-based challenges. These included:
-
Exploring trees and local habitats, learning about different species and the wildlife they support.
-
Taking part in outdoor learning, using nature as inspiration for writing, art, science and creative play.
-
Completing environmental actions, such as reducing waste, recycling, and learning how to protect our natural spaces.
-
Connecting with nature, through mindful activities, sensory exploration and spending time in green spaces.
These activities helped us earn the points required for the Silver Award and encouraged pupils to become confident, knowledgeable and responsible caretakers of the natural world.
Why This Matters
Achieving the Silver Award is not just about completing tasks—it is about helping children understand their role in looking after the planet and giving them meaningful experiences outdoors. Spending time in nature supports wellbeing, learning, creativity and teamwork, and helps our pupils develop a lifelong appreciation for the environment.
UNCRC
Our work towards the Silver Award also supports several important articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC):
🔹 Article 29 – Education must develop each child’s talents and abilities
Outdoor learning, nature investigations and creative activities all help children learn in new and exciting ways, developing confidence, curiosity and environmental understanding.
🔹 Article 24 – Right to a clean and safe environment
By learning how to protect trees, habitats and wildlife, our pupils are actively supporting their right to a healthy environment and understanding how to care for the planet.
🔹 Article 12 – Right to be heard
Children played a key part in planning, leading and sharing ideas during our Woodland Trust challenges. Their voices and choices helped shape the projects and activities we completed.
🔹 Article 31 – Right to play and recreation
The Silver Award encourages children to enjoy outdoor play, exploration and creativity in natural spaces, supporting their right to relax and play.
