Big Pit National Coal Museum

We are proud of our Welsh heritage!
Pupils from Key Stage 3 recently enjoyed an exciting and memorable visit to Big Pit National Coal Museum as part of their topic, “Is change always a good thing?”.
During the trip, pupils experienced the world-famous Underground Tour, travelling 300 feet below ground in a traditional mineshaft lift. Equipped with safety gear and accompanied by a real miner, they discovered what life was like for the thousands of people who once worked at the coal face.
Above ground, the group explored the Pithead Baths, where engaging exhibitions tell the story of Welsh coal mining and the communities shaped by it. In the cottage area, pupils had the opportunity to step inside a miner’s home, crawl through a ‘heading’, and gain a deeper understanding of the society built around the industry.

The day also included a fun and informative workshop, where pupils learned more about the daily lives and challenges faced by miners.

It was a fascinating visit that brought their learning to life and gave valuable insight into an important part of Welsh heritage.
