Mellow yellow: a magical day for mental health

Learners across Ysgol Hendrefelin wore yellow on Friday 9 October to mark World Mental Health Day. Bryncoch, Theodore Road and Velindre all joined in.
Why yellow?
World Mental Health Day falls on 10 October each year. The yellow theme comes from YoungMinds, the UK charity behind Hello Yellow, which supports the mental health of children and young people.
Minds on mental health
The morning focused on learning. Classes took part in lessons on mental health awareness, exploring what good mental health looks like and how to look after yourself. Activities covered positive thinking, resilience and kindness.
Abracadabra in the classroom. Then the magician arrived.
The magician moved from class to class, performing tricks up close and inviting learners to take part. Classrooms filled with laughter and gasps.
Your afternoon, your choice
Learners took charge in the afternoon. Each learner chose from six activities: basketball, Minecraft, arts and crafts, a talent show, a movie afternoon and bingo. Choice gives every learner a way to join in on their own terms, at their own pace.
Stars of the stage
The talent show earns its own mention. We have such talented young people at our school who love to perform.
Well-being all year round
Health and well-being forms one of the six Areas of Learning and Experience in the Curriculum for Wales. Mental health sits within this area. A day like Hello Yellow gives learners the words to talk about feelings and time to practise strategies they use in class all year.
Thank you to every learner, family and staff member who wore yellow today.
Every learner left today with one more way to look after their mental health.
