Shwmae! Su’mae! On Thursday 15 October, learners across our school spent the day celebrating Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae.
Diwrnod Shwmae Su’mae takes place every year on 15 October. The idea is simple. Start every conversation in Welsh, whatever your level. One “shwmae” at the classroom door counts.
The day started with Welsh cakes. Learners tasted pice ar y maen fresh from the bakestone tradition and shared them with friends and staff.
Then came the singing. Classes sang Welsh songs together, joining in with familiar tunes and learning new words along the way. Learners also watched Welsh-language programmes, hearing Welsh spoken in a relaxed and enjoyable way.
The Welsh quiz was a highlight. Staff hid clues around the school. Classes searched the corridors and classrooms to find each clue, then used the clues to answer a range of questions about Wales and the Welsh language. Learners worked as teams, moved around the building and used their Welsh to solve each question.
Every activity gave learners a chance to hear, speak and enjoy Welsh. The day also supports our Siarter Iaith work, helping Welsh become part of everyday school life.
Diolch yn fawr to every learner and staff member who took part.
Keep the conversations going at home. Say “shwmae” or “su’mae” to someone today.
