Building Skills and Memories: KS4 Pupils Create a Pizza Oven at Down to Earth, Gower.

Over the past few weeks, pupils from KS4 Groups 1 and 2 have taken part in an exciting hands-on project at Down to Earth in Gower. This unique experience combined teamwork, creativity, and traditional craft skills as the pupils worked together to build an outdoor pizza oven.

The project began with learning the art of dry stone walling—a traditional technique that involves carefully sorting and organizing rocks before laying them in a stable structure without mortar. Pupils quickly discovered that precision and patience are key to creating a strong foundation.

Next, they moved on to making cob, a natural building material made from clay, sand, straw, and water. Cob has been used for centuries in sustainable construction, and the pupils learned how to mix these materials to achieve the perfect consistency for shaping and building.

Throughout the project, the pupils demonstrated fantastic teamwork and resilience. Their efforts were rewarded not only with a completed pizza oven but also with an Agored Cymru qualification in Creating Heritage and Traditional Craft—a testament to their hard work and commitment.

We’re all looking forward to returning soon to fire up the oven and enjoy some well-earned pizzas!
