Aspire 4 shop for the allotment at Dobbies

Aspire 4 spent time at Dobbies Garden Centre in Swansea. The class went to buy supplies for the school allotment.

Gardening supplies came first. Learners searched the aisles for allotment essentials and chose items to take back to school.

Garden centres hold more than plants. Learners also browsed the toys and other fun items on display. Everyone had time to explore at their own pace.

Next stop: the fish.

The fish tanks gave learners a calm break during a busy day out. They spent a long stretch watching the fish swim around the tanks, taking in the quiet space together.

The café rounded off the trip. The class sat down for a drink before heading back to school.

Community trips form a regular part of learning at Ysgol Hendrefelin. The Curriculum for Wales sets out four purposes for every learner, including becoming healthy, confident individuals and ambitious, capable learners. A visit like this one gives Aspire 4 practice in moving through a busy shop, making choices and sharing a table in a public café. These skills transfer straight into life beyond school.

The allotment itself links learning across the curriculum. Planting and caring for crops covers science, healthy eating and teamwork. Learners see the full journey, from choosing supplies in the shop to harvesting what they grow.

Over the coming weeks, Aspire 4 will plant, water and look after their new supplies. Watch this space for updates on how the allotment develops.

A big thank you to the staff at Dobbies Swansea for welcoming the class.
