Rangoli patterns, a miniature rainforest and an open fire. Classes across Ysgol Hendrefelin swapped their classrooms for woods, parks and outdoor spaces to celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day.
The day gave learners the chance to explore new places, work together and try hands-on activities. Each class chose a different focus, with learning linked to culture, geography, practical skills and the changing seasons.
Dens, bridges and flower art with Discovery Den
Learners in Discovery Den packed their outdoor learning day with hands-on activities. They drew chalk patterns, built bridges from natural materials and made journey sticks. They also tried hapa zome, a Japanese art form where you pound flowers and leaves to transfer their colours and shapes onto fabric. To finish, learners worked together to build a story time den.
Woodland Rangoli with Horizon 5
Horizon 5 have been learning about Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Rangoli patterns are a colourful part of Diwali celebrations, so the class took this tradition into the woodland.
Learners gathered natural materials and arranged them into their own Rangoli designs. They developed their creativity and explored an important cultural tradition.

A miniature Amazon with Horizon 2
Horizon 2 spent an hour at Dyffryn Woods. Learners started by looking at pictures and a PowerPoint about the Amazon Rainforest. They talked about its features, the wildlife living there and its plants.
Next came the challenge. Working in two groups, learners used what they had learned to build their own miniature rainforests. Each one needed a mountain, a valley, trees and water.

Autumn treasure hunt with Horizon 1
Horizon 1 visited Gnoll Park and completed an autumn treasure hunt. The park gave learners plenty of space to explore and enjoy the season while they worked through the hunt.
Power tools and an open fire with Aspire
Aspire visited the Down to Earth Project for their last session. Learners had a fantastic time using power tools, then enjoyed the warmth of an open fire. The visit gave the class a memorable end to their time with the project.
Learning beyond the classroom
From Diwali traditions to the Amazon Rainforest, each activity took learning beyond the classroom. Learners tried something new, worked with their classmates and enjoyed time in the fresh air.
Da iawn pawb! Well done to every learner who took part.
