Learning About Our Rights: Food, Clothes, and a Safe Place to Live

This week, our children explored one of the most important rights in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) – the right to have food, clothing, and a safe place to live. These essentials help every child grow, learn, and feel secure.

Understanding Needs vs Wants

To begin the project, children took part in discussions about the difference between needs and wants.

  • Needs are things we must have to stay healthy and safe – like food, warm clothes, clean water, and a home.

  • Wants are the extra things we enjoy, such as toys, sweets, or video games.

The children worked together to sort pictures into “needs” and “wants,” using their reasoning skills to explain their choices. This helped them see why some rights are essential for every child around the world.

Creating Powerful Posters

After learning about these rights, the children designed bright and meaningful posters to share their ideas. Their artwork showed:

  • Healthy foods everyone should have

  • Different types of clothing for warmth and protection

  • Homes that feel safe, welcoming, and comfortable

  • Messages about fairness, kindness, and looking after one another

The posters not only reflected their understanding but also their creativity and empathy.

Why This Work Matters

These activities helped children recognise that all young people—everywhere—deserve to have their basic needs met. By talking about real-life situations and expressing their ideas through art, they developed a stronger understanding of compassion, equality, and human rights.
