Standing Together Against Racism: Celebrating Diversity and Children’s Rights

This week, our children took part in important learning about racism, human rights, and the importance of celebrating the diversity within our school community. Through stories, discussion, and creative activities, the children explored what racism is, how it affects people, and what we can all do to challenge it.
We linked this work to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which reminds us that every child deserves to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect—no matter who they are, where they come from, or what they look like.
Understanding Racism
Children learned that racism is when someone is treated unfairly because of the colour of their skin, their culture, or their ethnicity.
We talked about:
-
How racism can be hurtful and unfair
-
How it can happen in quiet, subtle ways as well as obvious ones
-
Why it is important to speak up and support others
The children shared thoughtful ideas about kindness, equality and the importance of standing up when something is wrong.
Linking to the UNCRC
Our discussions related to several key children’s rights:
🔵 Article 2 – Non-Discrimination
Every child has the right to be treated equally. No child should be treated differently because of their race, language, religion or background.
🔵 Article 12 – Respect for the Child’s Voice
Children have the right to express their thoughts and feelings—and to be listened to. Speaking up about unfairness helps protect everyone.
🔵 Article 30 – Children from Minority or Indigenous Groups
Children have the right to enjoy their own culture, language and traditions.
These rights remind us that racism has no place in school or in society.
Celebrating Diversity
Children took part in activities such as:
-
Sharing stories from different cultures
-
Exploring traditional music, celebrations and foods
-
Creating artwork that represents identity and community
-
Talking about what makes each of us unique
Through these activities, the children learned that our differences make us stronger—and that diversity should always be celebrated.
Our Responsibilities to Each Other
Alongside their rights, children discussed the responsibility we all share to:
-
Treat everyone with kindness and respect
-
Challenge unfair behaviour or language
-
Include others in play and learning
-
Celebrate what makes each person special
Together, we can help create a community where every child feels safe, valued, and proud of who they are.
